The Phenomenon and The Images

The term available light refers to any source of light that is not explicitly supplied by the photographer for the purpose of taking photos. It usually refers to sources of light that are available naturally – daylight or moonlight, lightning - or to artificial light already illuminating the vista - lamps, candle light, reflections and refractions from mirrors.

The images above, of Julia and Kae from the band Mr. Badger, were captured in a night club bathroom and in a photo booth, respectively.

Nothing was altered...the subjects were photographed as is.

The use of available light poses a variety of challenge for photographers. The brightness and direction of the light is usually not adjustable, limiting the photographers choices in the selection of shutter speeds and apertures as well as the time and location of photo shoots.

But these challenges do not deter me. I welcome them with open arms, open eyes and an open shutter... they have provided the inspiration for this exhibit in which I celebrate AVAILABLE LIGHT
